Benazir Bhutto, probably Pakistan's best hope for stability, was assassinated today (well, actually yesterday, but the International Date Line screws with everything). Bhutto was shot in the chest and head, reported many media sources. [1]
I need to practice the typical American hand-wringing at this point. How is Pakistan ever going to go anywhere with political leaders getting blown up? This is a tragedy, but I think it shows why Iraq and Afghanistan are having such a rough time. The U.S. needs to buckle down if we are going to get anything done over there. It is going to be tough, but if we do manage two stable governments, the effects would be hugely positive for the region.

The fact that she was a woman alone meant a lot for Pakistan. It's a sad day for Middle-Eastern Democracy.
My hope is that this will wake people up and remind them, 6 years after 9/11, that terrorism is still a real threat.
What a lousy way to start the new year.
What a surprise President Pervez Musharraf's biggest opponent Bhutto was murdered. The WOMAN who was going to lead Pakistan into a democracy suddenly dies and some how Musharraf is going to get away with it. Now I am not blaming him completely, he is a smart man and he will cover his tracks. Perhaps it was not even his doings, maybe just loyal followers. Musharraf announced he was not involved and that he will not rest until he finds the terrorist who did this. I question if that is true. It sure is lucky she is now out of the race. I mourn her death and the twenty other souls that were lost.
